A Call to Arms Sticky

The pristine wilderness of East Grand Lake is on the verge of being destroyed. An industrial wind farm of 40+ story tall wind turbines could be erected along Greenland Ridge on the Arm of East Grand Lake. A wind farm of this size would tower over the lake. Its flickering blades during the day, flashing lights at night, and low, rumbling noise could destroy the wilderness beauty of East Grand.

KIG is a citizens' group formed in December 2011 to fight this project and join forces with other organizations to help protect East Grand Lake. We already have over 225 members and are growing daily. This website provides information on this potential project (Overview), the economic and environmental problems with wind farms in valuable scenic areas of Maine (The Issues, Wind Power), links to other organizations and resources (Links), and what you can do to help (Join Us).

The situation is urgent. We do not have much time. If you wish to help protect East Grand Lake from this environmental disaster, please join us and keep coming back to this site for updated information.

Take a Stand to Keep It Grand!

Anticipated Project Location

We anticipate a project will be proposed for Greenland Ridge, approximately along the line marked in red on the map above.

A Change in the Wind

May
10

Recently I hiked up to the top of Lowell Ridge to see where twenty-one 400-foot wind towers will be placed. As I crested the mountain I came face to face with an energy policy that is at war with itself. The environmental destruction taking place there pits those seeking to reverse climate change against those who wish to preserve Vermont's pristine natural resources. While that battle rages, the economic cost to Vermont has been pushed aside as irrelevant…

PRESS RELEASE

Keep It Grand Formed to Fight Invasive Wind in Northern Maine

Danforth, ME
April, 2012

Keep It Grand (KIG), a citizens' organization formed on December 17th, 2011 to protect and preserve the natural beauty of East Grand Lake (Danforth, ME) and its surrounding watershed, announced today that it has garnered the support of over 275 members. KIG’s membership drive has recently begun in response to the threat of invasive wind development on East Grand Lake. The organization believes that an industrial wind farm, likely to be proposed for Greenland Ridge, adjoining the “Arm” of East Grand Lake, could have a devastating impact on the beauty and use of this exceptional natural resource. KIG believes that achieving sustainable energy production is a critical national environmental goal, but must be accomplished efficiently and without undue harm to unique and beautiful natural environments such as the East Grand Lake area. Wind farm projects, such as the completed Rollins Mountain project in Lincoln and the proposed project on Bowers Mountain in Carroll Township, are potential sources of abrupt and alarming impacts on the environment and economy in these communities. KIG believes that wind farms constructed on sites like Greenland Ridge may come with great environmental costs, jeopardize tourism and sport industries, and fail to support a greener and more sustainable Maine for all.

Keep It Grand seeks to protect the natural integrity and scenic beauty of East Grand Lake, its watershed, and surrounding landscape from environmental threats and inappropriate development activities such as industrial scale wind power through advocacy and public education.

Showings of “Windfall” planned for June & July at WWLT Building

Feb
03

KIG will be cosponsors with the Woodie Wheaton Land Trust (WWLT) of a powerful documentary of what happened to an upstate New York community when a large wind farm was built in their midst. The first showing will be June 9 at 1pm and 7pm at the WWLT building in Forest City. The second showing will be July 21 also at 1 and 7pm at the WWLT building. Please plan to attend a showing and spread the word to others who are still undecided about the dangers wind farms pose to EGL and other lake environments in Maine.

For any interested parties, the new documentary Windfall is screening soon in various locations throughout Maine.

Wind power: it’s clean; it’s green; it’s good.

Or is it?
